NICK FANNER - BAND, STRINGS & INSTRUMENTS
Having retired after 31 years of teaching elementary and secondary band with the Saskatoon Public School Division, Nick continues to be very active in music education. He currently directs the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra (which he formed in 2017), as well as the Saskatoon Community Bands beginner jazz band and intermediate concert band. Mr. Fanner has directed the Regina Public Schools Jr. Band in 2023 & 2019, as well as the Regina Catholic Schools Jr. Band (while adjudicating at Band Days in 2019),the 2018 Sask. Band Association South Sask. Intermediate Band & 2014 South Sask. Jr. Band. He continues to be a member of the staff at the Prairielands Jazz Camp in Regina, having done so since 2002(being unavailable only twice). As a sessional lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan, Mr. Fanner has team taught courses in Jazz Pedagogy (Fall 2022), Instrumental Music Teaching in Secondary School (co-taught: Winter 2021), Brass Techniques (Trumpet) (Fall 2021) as well as Jazz History prior to that. He has also served numerous times as an instructor at the annual University of Saskatchewan High School Select Jazz program. Nick received his M. Ed. (Curriculum) from the University of Saskatchewan (2000), which saw him write a locally developed instrumental jazz curriculum for high school students. He also received his B.Mus. (Mus.Ed.) degree from the U of S (1987). Mr. Fanner was a presenter at the 2019 Sask. Music Conference, where he presented a session focused on the importance of fundamentals when teaching band at any level.Mr. Fanner continues to enjoy ongoing opportunities to engage in workshops in the areas of both jazz and concert bands around the province, as well as music festival adjudication in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Nick continues to be a member of the trumpet section of the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra (Dean McNeill –artistic director) on the majority of each season’s performances. He is honoured to be the recipient of the2022 SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Special Recognition Award and the 2019 Saskatchewan Band Association’s Distinguished Band Director Award.
Piano - Hannah Marple
Hannah is passionate about bringing music to life by nurturing a curiosity in students that connects with real life. She is a registered music teacher in Saskatoon and has been teaching piano and theory since 2008 to all ages of students, in schools and at her home studio. She received her ATCL performance diploma from the Trinity College of London in Vancouver in 2017, became an RCM Elementary Piano Specialist in 2019, and a certified Music For Young Children teacher in 2020. She continues to grow pursuing another diploma in piano pedagogy with Kathleen Lohrenz Gable, in addition to solo studies with Bonnie Nicholson. Besides teaching, Hannah has worked with youth at the Summer Academy for Voice and Piano, presented at the International Conference for Music For Young Children, serves on the Saskatoon Registered Music Teacher’s board, and adjudicates for the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. She thoroughly enjoys collaborating with other artists, choirs, and instruments, takes voice lessons and especially enjoys working together with her duet partner at the piano.
She believes in creating and sharing an environment for students to discover how music is relevant in every day life. Away from the piano, Hannah is usually found outdoors – skiing, running or cycling along the South Saskatchewan River!
